Can I use benzoyl peroxide and L-ascorbic acid together?
This is a rule between two of Piel's ingredient families: benzoyl peroxide and L-ascorbic acid.
Piel's routine check says: Caution
Benzoyl peroxide and pure vitamin C can each make the other less effective. Use them at different times of day. This applies when applied at the same time.
Both are reactive by design, and that is the problem: benzoyl peroxide gives up oxygen readily, and pure vitamin C is an antioxidant whose job is to take it. Together, each spends itself on the other.
As with the retinoid pair, the cost is quiet — a routine that feels complete and delivers less of both than it appears to. Nothing on the skin says so, and nothing on either label warns about it.
The fix is the clock rather than the order: vitamin C in the morning, benzoyl peroxide in the evening, so neither meets the other on skin. Piel's rule names L-ascorbic acid, not the vitamin C derivatives, which sit in their own family.
